Lauding Chief Minister Mayawati for Dalit leadership, the Delhi Jama Masjid Imam Syed Ahmad Bukhari on Monday asked the UP Muslims to keep away from the Congress.

Addressing journalists here after floating a new outfit “Muslim Majlis Amal” (Muslim Conference for Action) on Monday, Bukhari poured venom on the Congress for doing nothing for the community. Bukhari, expressing concern over migration of UP Muslims towards Congress because of failure of other secular parties, said, “it is a dangerous trend”.

He also accused the Congress-led UPA government of fabricating fake terror cases against Muslim youth. He said all Muslims ministers either at the centre or in states had completely failed to solve the problems of the community. He said the Congress and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should apologize to the community for the demolition of Babri mosque in Ayodhya and assure for its reconstruction. “Then only we can support it”, he added.

Bukhari has also nominated Mahmood Ahmad (vice president), Rahat Mahmood Chaudhury (general secretary), Tariq Bukhari, Faizan Khan Ghazi (secretaries) and Nawab Uddin Naqshbandi (treasurer) of the organization. The states’ convenors are Bilal Noorani (UP), Abdul Rahman, Irfan Quershi (Maharashtra), Mohd Arif and Jamil Anjum (Delhi).

Pointing out that the organization would not enter into electoral politics, Bukhari said it would certainly weigh options for support during elections. It would function as pressure group, he added.

Laying stress on unity among Muslim leaders, Bukhari said despite their political colours they should come on one platform for the cause of the community.

On Mayawati, the Delhi Imam said “whether she has done anything for Muslim community or not but her performance for Dalit upliftment should be appreciated”. He said Muslims were skeptical of Mayawati because they think she might rejoin hands with the BJP for political purpose.

Bukhari said Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav suffered in 2009 Lok Sabha election because of alliance with BJP leader Kalyan Singh. “Yadav has now snapped ties with Kalyan Singh and it would be seen how he brings back the community to SP’s fold”.

Bukhari, who had formed United Democratic Front (UDF) before 2007 UP assembly elections, said the “experiment had failed because of wrong choice of the candidates”. The UDF fielded Yaqoob Qureshi from Meerut but after winning the election Yaqoob merged the UDF in the BSP.
