Taking a serious note of suicide by farmers due to debts in some parts of the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has directed to check unnecessary harassment of small defaulters, an official spokesman said in Lucknow.

"To save small defaulters from harassment, the CM has directed that first notices should be issued to people having a default of rupees one lakh and only after that process of recovery should be initiated," he said.

Mayawati has directed that the district administration should concentrate more on recovery from the defaulters having a debt of more than rupees one lakh, he said.

"The CM has issued the directive taking cognisance of incidents where farmers committed suicide after recovery certificates were issued against them by the banks," the spokesman said.

He said that earlier barring agricultural dues, there was a provision that all type of action could be taken for recovery of dues upto rupees one lakh.

"A number of incidents have came into fore wherein several farmers committed suicide due to recovery certificates issued by the banks and the situation was serious in Bundelkhand region," the spokesman said.

He said that the CM also held a meeting with the officials of agriculture, banking and revenue departments in this regard.
