The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday nominated comedian Raju Shrivastav as party candidate for the Lok Sabha election from Kanpur seat.
Raju, 49, born and brought up in Kanpur, will take on union cabinet minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.
While the BSP has fielded businessman Salim Ahmad, the BJP is yet to decide the candidate. Popularly known as "Raju Bhai", the comedian has carved out a niche for himself for mimicry.
In 2009 Lok Sabha election he had also expressed desire to contest the Lok Sabha election from Allahabad on Congress ticket. However then it could not materialize.
In 2012 assembly election Raju had campaigned for the Congress candidate Ajay Kapoor in Kanpur. Earlier had worked for the Congress in Bihar assembly election.
The SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav announced the candidature of Raju Shrivastav and two others- sitting members Bal Kumar Patel from Mirzapur and Radhey Mohan Singh from Ghazipur.
The party had earlier announced 63 names of the candidates. The party has also made it clear that change in the candidature would be in exceptional situation.
Earlier the party had nominated cabinet minister Om Prakash Singh from Ghazipur. However he has been denied ticket. This is the second jolt to minister in last one week.
The chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had divested him of land development and water resource departments and allocated tourism to him.
Meanwhile the SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav has called upon the party workers to gear up for the election.
Yadav has already indicated that election could be held any time in second half of 2013. The party is in election mode as formation of booth committees has been going on.
Apart from the SP, its main rival-BSP- has also cleared names of most of the candidates. However so far there is no ticket distribution exercise in the Congress and BJP.
