Embarrassed by the fake Gouri case, senior officials in the director general of police office sent a terse communication to the superintendents of police not to brief the media about the workout of cases unless there was a proper investigation and all facts were verified.

This not the first instance of the fake workout of a case by the UP police. After the murder of chief medical officer Dr VK Arya in October 2010, the UP police claimed to have solved case by arresting the 'killers' Ajay Kumar Mishra, Sumit Dixit and Amit Dixit. Later the case was handed over to special task force and it was found that Anand Tiwari, Vinod Sharma and RK Verma were involved in the killing. The police had to release Mishra and Dixit from jail.

In 1998, the UP police claimed to have killed the mafiosi Dhananjay Singh and his associates in an encounter. Later, it was found that the police had killed four innocent persons. A case was registered against three dozen cops involved in the encounter.

A senior police officer said, "The police force is under pressure to work out cases. Sometimes senior police officers work in haste. Without proper verification, they claim to solve a case. Strict action should be taken against such officers."
