The worst apprehensions came true when the body of Jyoti Rani (24), the MBBS student who went missing on Tuesday evening after leaving a suicide note, was fished out from Gomti River on Wednesday morning.
A final-year student at the CSM Medical University, Jyoti committed suicide by jumping into the river late on Tuesday night. She was under depression after the death of her cousin Sarvesh. He died two-days before in a road accident.
After the cremation of Sarvesh took place on Tuesday afternoon, Jyoti compelled her mother Munni Devi to drop her to the hostel saying she needed to study for the forthcoming exams.
Though Munni Devi had asked other hostellers to look after Jyoti but she managed to leave the campus at around 5.30 pm.
"After her mother dropped her at the hostel, Jyoti went to the market and came back in few minutes. She looked depressed and locked her room from inside saying she wanted to sleep," said a hosteller.
"Jyoti first tried to cut her neck, but failed to do so. After some time she left the hostel on her two-wheeler," said proctor Dr AA Mahdi.
When her friends came to know that she had left the hostel they to call her on cell phone, but no one received the calls. They even informed the proctorial board and Jyoti's father Bachuwa Prasad, who is presently posted as labour welfare office in Bulandshahar.
"When we broke the lock of Jyoti's room we found blood stains on her bed. Her mobile phone had over 100 missed calls majority of which were made by her friends but all the calls of past few days were deleted," said a cop who went inside her room on Tuesday night.
A manhunt was launched for Jyoti but cops could only find her two-wheeler near Vaikunth Dham till Tuesday mid night.
On Wednesday morning Jyoti's footwear and Dupatta was found near Vaikunth Dham after which divers were called to look for her body in the river. The body was recovered at around 11 am near Vaikunth Dham.
"In her suicide note Jyoti had written that she is upset with her cousin's death and she has decided to take the extreme step," said Circle Officer Chowk Anoop Kumar.
Her body was brought to the CSMMU campus for a post mortem examination where students in large number had gathered.
Students alleged that search operations were not conducted properly that eventually led to the death. They said if search operation was launched in a massive way Jyoti might have been found alive.
