As the state gears up for the poorna kumbh, the culture department too has gotten into action to enliven the mega event. A budget of R 1.50 crore has been allotted to the department that is planning a wide variety of cultural events to be held during the kumbh mela.
“The focus would be on showcasing the rich folk culture of the state and performances would encapsulate the essence of entire Uttar Pradesh,” said YP Singh, nodal officer of cultural events at kumbh.
As per the plan, three stages would be set up at the three entrances of the mela where performances would be held throughout the day. In addition to the folk art programmes showcasing the dances and music of various parts of UP, the department also plans to stage Ramlila and Raslila in traditional style.
Other activities proposed include art exhibitions set up by the department on various themes to showcase the rich culture of UP and also act as a guide to the importance of kumbh mela. There would also be seminars and discussions by experts on various aspects of kumbh.
“Cultural programmes, performances and other related activities have always been a part of the kumbh mela. But this time, when it's time for the poorna kumbh, after twelve years, the scale of celebrations are sure to get bigger,” said Singh.
In the kumbh, held in 2001, a number of activities were held and the department has compiled various writings, discussions and descriptions of the event in books-'Sangam ki reti par 40 din' and 'Prayag-Ateet, Vartaman aur Bhavishya' that form a basis of research and act as guides for the people.
