Curfew remained in force in Faizabad city and Bhadarsa town areas of the district on Sunday though no untoward incident was reported since Saturday night.

The curfew in Faizabad city was clamped on October 25 and in Bhardasa the next day following large-scale communal violence. Violence broke out during immersion of Durga idols in the city on Wednesday last in which two people were reported killed and many injured. Over 100 shops and houses were also burnt in Faizabad and Bhadarsa. Faizabad district magistrate Deepak Agarwal indicated the possibility of curfew relaxation for a few hours if peace prevailed in the city on Sunday night. He also said the schools and colleges in the city would remain closed till the situation became normal.

Para-military forces staged a flag march in the affected area of Faizabad and Bhadarsa town (in Bikapur block). The district administration has registered 20 FIRs in connection with the communal violence and 70 arrests have been made.

The administration has started setting up a ward-wise dialogue between both the communities, presided over by the Faizabad district magistrate, in order to maintain harmony.

The common people are finding it difficult to get essential commodities like milk, cooking gas, vegetables, food grains and medical facilities. The prices of common vegetables like onion and potato have gone up to Rs. 25 per kg and Rs. 40 per kg respectively in the unaffected areas.

Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha member Vinay Katiyar and Samajwadi Party MLA from Ayodhya Tej Narayan Pandey addressed journalists at separate places in the morning. They appealed to the locals to maintain peace and harmony. Katiyar said the violence in Faizabad, Rudauli and Bhadarsa on Vijaya Dashmi seemed to be pre-planned. He added that the distribution of kerosene oil in Bhadarsa town by a licence-holder after violence on Vijaya Dashmi should be an issue for investigation.

On his part, Tej Narayan Pandey said he had requested the chief minister to sanction immediate monetary help to the victims and compensate them later on after assessing the damages.

Earlier, on Saturday, the festival of Eid-ul-Zuha and the remaining parts of Ramlila were performed under strict police observation. The administration also indicated that facebook messages and SMSs were being scrutinised for any evidence.

An agency report said former state BJP president Surya Pratap Sahi was detained in Sahanajava when he was going to Faizabad from Deoria.

The state administration has already suspended additional district magistrate (City), additional superintendent of police and in-charge of Kotwali city and transferred the city magistrate after they were found lax in discharge of their duties when the violence took place.

Additional director general of police(law and order) Jagmohan Yadav had also reached Faizabad to personally supervise the operations to control the situation. Over 100 commandos along with 400 sub-inspectors and several PAC companies were camping in the trouble-torn areas. CM Akhilesh Yadav has asked the officials to normalise the situation in Faizabad at the earliest.
