Dimple Yadav, wife of the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, is all set to get elected unopposed from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in by-elections. Two other candidates in the fray withdrew their nominations papers on Friday.
The seat had fallen vacant following resignation of Akhilesh Yadav who has now become member of Vidhan Parishad (upper house) in UP. Dimple Yadav is first candidate to be elected unopposed for the Lok Sabha in recent memory.
Decks were cleared for her unopposed election after the withdrawal of nominations of two other candidates- Dashrath Shankhwar (Sanyukt Samajwadi Dal) and Sanjeev Katiyar (independent).
While the Congress and BSP did not field candidate against Dimple, the BJP announced candidate at the last moment but he could not reach Kannauj to file nomination papers in time on June 6.
In scrutiny all the nomination papers of all three candidates were found valid. However on Friday, both rivals withdrew their papers paving way for unopposed election of Dimple.
The chief electoral officer Umesh Sinha confirmed withdrawal of nomination papers by both rival candidates.
With the two candidates withdrawing their nomination papers, the poll observer and district magistrate as district returning officer will now send report to the election commission for the decalration of the result.
As per poll schedule, the last date of withdrawal of nomination was June 9 and polling was to be held on June 24. During her first stint in electoral battle, Dimple was defeated by film star-turned politician Raj Babbar (Congress) in 2009.
Adressing rally before her nomination on June 5, the chief minister said only one LS by-election-Kannauj- was going to be held in the country and it would create history.
Kannauj has indeed created history by sending his wife to Lok Sabha unopposed. Akhilesh Yadav had been three-time MP from this city of "itr" (frangrance).
