With Eid round the corner, a carnival fervour has come over the markets, as shoppers throng to buy not only goodies for the fest but also gifts for their loved ones. After all, Eidy is something for which everyone waits the whole year.
This year, a silver hue has been added to the gift items flooding the market.
Silver notes having prints of 786, with photos of Mecca and Medina, show-pieces of silver Mecca and Medina, silver sandals, silver nagras and silver armbands are selling like hot cakes.
“This year, new items are being introduced to attract young consumers, like the silver sewai set, gulab jal sprinkler of silver, silver currency notes and dollars with Mecca and 786 prints, which are purchased mostly by youths,” said secretary, Chowk Sarrafa Vypar Mandal Kailash Chandra Jain.
He added, “All these items are also getting booked in advance by some families. Today we booked three pair of silver sandals, fitted with lights.”Shahabuddin, another jeweller in the market endorsed the view.
“There is no downturn in economy when it comes to celebrating a festival like Eid. if you can give zakat, then you can buy something for your loved ones too,” he said.
The silver currency notes cost around R600 , while silver coins are priced at R500.
The Mecca-medina showpiece is moderately priced at R3,600 and is attracting maximum customers.
Silver sandals are priced between R12,000 to R18,000. For children, the footwear is priced at R3,000 to R5,000.
“This is the cost of a pair of good quality shoe,” said another jeweller.
The sewai set is priced between R20,000 to R50,000, while gulabjal sprinkler set of 1 kg silver is priced at R50,000.
“All these things are not merely for show but are also investments. Today silver price has come crashing down but tomorrow it can skyrocket,’’ said Chowk jeweller Siddharth Jain.
Aminabad j eweller KC Rastogi said, “Many people have ordered silver pandan , silver dinner set and small gold pendents of Mecca-Medina. The high end customers are out for purchase now.”
