Fever pitch: 'Sonia unwell' hoarding gets two Congress leaders axed

“The mother now keeps unwell and all responsibilities have shifted to the brother”: What was meant to be an emotional appeal to Priyanka Gandhi to contest elections has gone haywire, raising a storm of no mean proportions in Allahabad.

The hoarding, put up recently in the city’s Civil Lines area, has cut the local Congress leaders to the quick. What they take exception to is the line on Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

“Soniaji is such a dynamic and active lady. We revere her because of her qualities and sacrifices. Making such comments about her amounts to sullying her image,” said city Congress president Abhay Awasthy.

UPCC spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi further said, "Some outsiders are getting these things done and are depicting party chief Sonia Gandhi as unwell. The party has taken a strong note of it," he said, adding, that if required a case would also be lodged against them.

Tripathi said Sonia Gandhi is ably looking after the party affairs and leading it, but some people are out to damage her and the party's image.

Meanwhile, heads have already rolled. The men responsible for putting up the hoarding - Haseeb Ahmad and Shrish Chandra Dubey - have been suspended with immediate effect.
Ahmad, the secretary of the city Congress committee, has been sacked and  the two have been showcaused as well.

But the party leadership is yet to be placated. State Congress president Nirmal Khatri has now directed that an FIR be lodged against them.

The local leaders are doing their best to oblige.

“We have sought legal opinion on the issue, since Sonia Gandhi is the UPA chairman and thereby holds a constitutional post,” added Awasthy.
