Faced with an acute shortage of power distribution transformers, the UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) seems to have finally decided to find a way to resume business relations with the private firms to which it had issued show-cause notices for supplying transformers of poor quality.

The corporation management has set up technical committees, one each for all the distribution companies to randomly test transformers procured from the ‘show-caused’ firms and find out if the transformers were substandard.

Headed by director technical of discoms, the committees will submit their report shortly to the power corporation management which will take into consideration the finding before deciding the fate of the firms. The expert committees have been asked to open 2% of the total transformers purchased from each firm and test their quality.

Upset over the damage of a large number of transformers in May and June, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had last year asked the power corporation to take action against the private firms that supplied poor quality transformers during the previous regime. This prompted the then power corporation chairman and managing director Avnish Awasthi to issue showcause notices to around a dozen firms while taking a decision not to purchase transformers from them till they came out with a satisfactory reply. Sources said the corporation was facing a serious crunch of transformers now.
