Students appearing in the backpaper examinations at Lucknow University later this year need no longer be afraid of risking their results if they fail to put up a good show.

The university has made it clear that if examinees score less marks in the improvement examination, marks that they had obtained in the earlier exams will be considered final.

This implies that the new rules, according to which marks obtained in the backpaper or improvement examinations will be mentioned in the marksheet will not be effective for this year. They will be applicable only from the next academic session.

Controller of examination Aqil Ahmad said he has studied the minutes of the examination committee which specifically mention this. “There is no reason for the candidates appearing in the said exams to panic about losing marks.

Of the two sets of marks obtained in the two exams, whichever are the highest will be recorded. But from next year, the new rules will be enforced, which mandate that only the marks obtained in the improvement examination will be final, irrespective of twhther the student has scored more or less,” he explained.

University officials hope this would put to rest all speculations and doubts that were haunting candidates for improvement exams.

The university, however, has not finalised the dates of the examination. There are indications that they may be held sometime in November just after Diwali. But a lot depends on the court’s decision on student union elections, sources said.
