Two people were injured in fresh violence in the old city area on Thursday, a day after one person was shot dead and 10 were injured in sectarian clashes.

Thursday witnessed brick-batting and firing between two groups of different sects when the body of the deceased was being taken out for a pre-burial ritual in a procession in Hussainabad locality.

Later, while proceeding for the burial, people staged a protest in the old city for around two hours. Mobs indulged in arson and violence. A madrasa teacher and a vegetable vendor were injured in the violence.

Tension in the area eased by late afternoon after the burial of the person who died in indiscriminate firing in Wazirganj locality.

The Uttar Pradesh government announced Rs. 5 lakh ex gratia for the kin of the deceased, Rs. 1 lakh each for the critically injured and Rs. 50,000 each for those with minor injuries.

The police have arrested six persons for the violence after lodging four separate FIRs. Raids are on to nab others involved in the violence.

Administration officials and the police said the situation was tense, but under control. Rapid Action Force (RAF) and PAC personnel were deployed in sensitive areas of the old city.

“At least 24 persons, including former BSP MP Dawood Ahmad, local corporator Mohd Naeem and his brother, Sajid, have been named in the FIRs registered in connection with Wednesday’s firing,” said Lucknow senior superintendent of police RK Chaturvedi.

On Wednesday, the violence had broken out in Wazirganj area after a religious congregation (majlis) was attacked.
