The railway overbridge coming up at Lohia Path is stuck in a roadblock for last one year, thanks to district administration and bridge corporation officials who couldn’t resolve the private graveyard issue coming in the way.
Sources say the bridge corporation has won many awards for timely completing bridges in Mumbai and abroad. But, it seems to have lost the will to get the Lohia Path bridge completed despite the fact that the bridge will benefit at least 10,00,000 commuters of transGomti area every day. Which, sources say, means will ease traffic on important city thoroughfares to a great extent.
After spending around Rs. 30 crore on the construction of around 900 metre-long bridge, the officials don’t know when the bridge would be opened for the public. They don’t have the reply as to why hard earned public money had been spent on the project which eventually had to hit a roadblock.
Sources argue, the bridge officials must have done a survey before taking up the construction work. Didn’t they notice then that a private graveyard might come in the way? sources ask and add, “the officials could have tried legal options to resolve the issue.”
“Graveyard is an emotional matter attached to a community, had it been anything except that we would have taken a different stand. But, the matter concerns the member of minority community. We cannot take decision in a haste,” says district administration official on condition of anonymity.
He adds, “This is the reason the administration is waiting for the higher political bosses to intervene and come up with a solution. In the meantime, we have offered the owner a number of solutions but he keeps on changing the track.”
The official said the owner of graveyard had changed his stance several times after agreeing to allow the construction of a slab over it.
Executive engineer PWD DR Yadav says, “We are hopeful of a solution. Any individual must consider the benefits of lakhs of residents. We have proposed a concrete slab over the graveyard so that the graves remain undamaged at the same time the traffic would also not be disturbed.”
However, there are provisions under the law under which the district administration has the right to acquire the land for projects of public interest said an official.
