GST to be part of UP Board’s Class 10 curriculum

GST, as a separate topic of study, has been included in syllabus of social science for Class 10 students as part of the new updated syllabus released on May 5.

Now over 30 lakh high school students enrolled in different schools of Uttar Pradesh and affiliated to UP Board will get lessons in goods and service tax (GST).

The UP Board has included it in the course of Class 10 students in the new syllabus it has finalized for implementation from the current academic session.

GST, as a separate topic of study, has been included in syllabus of social science for Class 10 students as part of the new updated syllabus released on May 5. 

GST could also get included in the course of intermediate students as well in the coming days as part of their study of trade organisations and taxes, a proposal still under consideration of board officials holding meetings of course committees since July 3. If a consensus is reached, GST as a separate topic could get introduced for Class 12 commerce subject. 

“The new curriculum has been notified by the UP Board and GST has been made part of it. This is a welcome move as GST is now in effect and knowledge of it is important for the students. This inclusion will introduce the Hindi heartland state's students to the latest tax early. With GST set to be included in college/varsity level as well, early knowledge is will make students comfortable with this new tax system governing their lives,” said Pradeep Tripathi, principal, Madhav Gyan Kendra Intermediate College, Naini. 

The UP Board from 2017-18 academic session has also introduced lessons in banking from Class 9 itself in the new amended curriculum for social science introduced for lakhs of students in over 25,000 schools of the board.

This knowledge of banking and financial world has been included for students of Classes 9 to 12 in the amended curriculum. The amended curriculum, which has also brought changes in other subjects like Hindi, home science, science etc besides social science and moral, sports and physical education subjects also, is also available on the board’s official website www.upmsp.edu.in. 

A vital part of the newly added parts of the curriculum of social science and moral, sports and physical education is aimed at making them honest taxpayers by driving home the importance of the exercise in national interest and development—all through theory lessons, project works and visits to nationalized and private banks. 

Keeping the push to cashless transactions across the country, knowledge of procuring and using debit as well as credit cards, safety precautions in their use, online transactions with banks as well as the process of applying for PAN cards etc have all been included at different levels by the board.
