lucknow Updated: Apr 18, 2011 21:22 IST

The Allahabad High Court on Monday issued notices to the country's top civil aviation authority and five private airlines, on a PIL seeking cancellation of the companies' licenses for arbitrarily spiking fares during occasions like the 'Jat Stir' and the Cricket World Cup.

The court has given three weeks to the respondents to reply and fixed May 16 as the next day of hearing.

A division Bench comprising Chief Justice FI Rebello and Justice DK Arora passed this order on a PIL filed by social activist Nutan Thakur.

The petitioner has alleged that airlines hiked fares by 2-3 times on certain occasions against public interest and welfare.

The court has issued notices to Jet Airways, Jet Lite India Limited, Kingfisher Airlines, GO Airlines (India) Private Ltd, Inter Globe Aviation Private Ltd (INDIGO) and also the Director General of Civil Aviation.
