In a significant development, the Allahabad high court has sought a reply from Uttar Pradesh government as to why no infrastructure has been provided to the newly created Amethi district. The court has asked the state counsel to file a short counter affidavit in two weeks’ time.

In July, the Akhilesh Yadav government had granted district status to Amethi, after the Allahabad high court had asked it to issue a fresh notification to this effect.

The notification had brought four assembly constituencies-- Tiloi, Gauriganj, Amethi and Musafirkhana -- under the umbrella of Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The order was passed by the bench of Chief Justice Shiva Kirti Singh and justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya on two PILs filed by Ved Prakash Singh and others.

The petitioner submitted that the new district had been created, but the required infrastructure had not been provided yet. He said the creation of the new district didn’t mean anything without necessary infrastructure. The state government should have to provision for at least Rs 2,000 crore to ensure proper district-like infrastructure in Amethi.

Appearing on behalf of the government, additional advocate general Bulbul Godiyal sought time for seeking instructions from the government. It also gave time to the petitioner to file a supplementary affidavit giving details of the necessary infrastructure needed.
