Honour killing: Kin accused of burning girl alive to bury rape case

In a case of suspected honour killing, the kin of a 14-year-old rape victim have been charged with burning her alive at her residence in Ramghat police station area, Bulandshahr district, earlier this week.
The girl died while undergoing treatment at the JN Medical College on Tuesday.
In an FIR lodged with the police, the victim’s mother accused an uncle, her grandparents and a few others of killing the girl. According to her, the girl was allegedly raped by her uncle around six months ago — leading to friction between the family members. Although the rest of the family tried to strike a compromise between the mother and the uncle, she insisted on taking legal action against the accused.
The victim’s mother went to visit her parents in Aligarh on March 27, leaving the girl alone at home. “The uncle and a few relatives thought that was a good opportunity to end the controversy altogether and avoid the matter from becoming public. They assaulted her and set her on fire after locking her in a room,” she alleged.
The girl was rushed to a medical college in Aligarh, but she finally succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning.
Police conducted a post-mortem examination and handed the body over to her parents. An FIR has been lodged against the girl’s uncle and four others.
