Regional passport officer JP Singh was booked for cheating in a law examination, on Thursday. Singh, a Himachal cadre IPS officer, was sitting for the third semester LLB exam from the city’s Narmdeshwar College.

Lucknow University officials said the flying squad, during their rounds, recovered hand-written chits from Singh around 11 am. After being caught red-handed, Singh allegedly entered into a verbal duel with the teachers.

Officials said Singh was allowed to continue with the examination after the chits and the answer sheets were confiscated. Action would be initiated against him under the anti-copying ordinance, they added. His answersheet and the chits have been submitted to a committee which would take further action on the matter.

Lucknow University proctor UD Mishra said Singh was taking the exam as an ordinary candidate and no special privilege was allowed to him.

Singh, however, said he had been falsely implicated in the case. “When I went to take the examination two days ago, the same teacher was on invigilation duty. I had an argument with him, after which it became an ego problem with them and they went ahead to make such an allegation against me.”

Mishra said two more students were also caught cheating in the same room.
