The Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi has tied up with the postal department to despatch its holy ash by Speed Post to devotees across the country.
Beginning this month, Speed Post packets, each containing holy ash along with two rudraksha beads and holy recital books, will be sent to devotees on request.
Varanasi Divisional Commissioner Nitin Gokaran, who also heads the temple governing body, said: "The postal department has prepared special water-proof envelopes to cart the divine pack that will be available for Rs 65."
In July, the temple administration had launched www.kashivishwanath.org website, offering prayers online. Tens of thousands are reported to have logged on to the site to seek the blessings of Lord Vishwanath since then.
Temple authorities are hoping that the Speed Post package will generate similar interest.
Enthusiastic about the novel service, Uttar Pradesh Post Master General Neelam Srivastava told IANS: "I am sure this package would generate a lot of demand from the southern states. We are also planning to undertake a similar exercise at Mathura and Chitrakoot."
