About 7.5 lakh cable TV sets went blank in seven major cities of the state on Sunday midnight as the deadline to get set top boxes (STB) installed got over.
Signals were, however, resumed in Lucknow on Monday evening by cable operators through a local arrangement. Barring few channels, viewers were getting signals of all channels.
“We had to resume signals or else it would have led to law and order problem,” said an operator adding that the services were resumed across Lucknow after 7 pm. Earlier in the state capital itself, nearly 2.5 lakh non STB TVs blanked out. Another 90,000 TVs in Kanpur, over one lakh in Agra, 52,000 in Allahabad, 70,000 in Varanasi, 60,000 in Ghaziabad and 50,000 in Meerut stopped receiving signals as soon as the clock struck 12:01 am on Monday.
Despite heavy demand from various quarters, state government officials said they were helpless as it was the central government’s policy.
In fact, CM Akhilesh Yadav had written to Union minister Manish Tiwari seeking deferment of the March 31 deadline. “A response is awaited,” an official told HT.
