While the nation is protesting against the Delhi gangrape, the legal luminaries of Lucknow came out with a list of suggestions to make UP safe for women.

Senior lawyers and advocates came out of their courtrooms along with retired justice, academicians, professionals, students and other prominent citizens to support the victim and ensure safety of women.

“We are aghast at the barbaric act. Highest legal punishment should be given to the rapists. They should be made to realize what they have done to the girl,” said Bulbul Godiyal, additional advocate general.

This is for the first time that the legal professionals pronounced their verdict on a case that has united the country against the rapists. The group took out a candle march from Vidhan Bhawan to GPO to sensitise the city against gender biases.

Many admitted that the loopholes in the judicial process lead to increase in the number of cases of atrocities against women.

“People are losing faith in the system. It is hard to even get heard if you are not well connected. We want that every upcountry case is also dealt with equal care and concern as that of any high profile metro case,” said Surabhi Sahai, a lawyer.

The lawyers will submit a memorandum to the chief minister and the district magistrate suggesting ways to enhance the safety of women in UP.

The members of the legal fraternity emphasised on the establishment of fast track courts to deal with such cases. “There is so much backlog in the courts that it would take years to speed up the new cases. Thus fast track courts and strict punishments for the perpetrators of such crimes are the only solution,” said Sahai.
