Hundreds of students resorted to arson and vandalism after two of their peers were killed and two others injured on being hit by a speeding truck in front of Babu Banaras Das Engineering College here on Faizabad Road in the Chinhat area late on Wednesday night.
Police resorted to lathi-charge to control the angry students, who later blocked the highway. Their protest was on when reports were last received. The students killed and injured in the accident could not be identified till late night.
The accident took place when a group of four students was crossing the road in front of the college at around 11pm. Police said the victims were apparently inmates of private hostels near the college.
Following the mishap, angry students set ablaze some vehicles parked near the spot and blocked the road. They scuffled with police personnel who rushed to the spot. Later, personnel from several police stations and the PAC were called to control the situation. Senior police officials, including senior superintendent of police Rajesh Pandey, rushed to the spot.
A group of students also scuffled with the staff of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where the injured were taken after the accident.
