In a step towards making public transport safer for women commuters, the police on Thursday carried out a massive drive against auto-rickshaw and tempo drivers playing vulgar music in their vehicles.
During the crackdown in all four police circles of the trans-Gomti area, at least 227 music players were removed from autos and tempos.
SSP J Ravinder Goud said, “The drive was planned with the intent to ensure safety of women commuters and enforce social discipline among auto and tempo drivers. The enforcement of social discipline through precautionary measures of not allowing vulgar songs in public transport vehicles would help in checking street crimes.”
“The daily commute becomes an ordeal, especially for those who travel in autos and tempos as drivers play vulgar songs high volume causing humiliation for women” said a woman employee of a private company while appreciating the move.
ASP Habibul Hasan said the COs of Mahanagar, Aliganj, Ghazipur and Gomti Nagar have been asked to conduct the drive under their supervision.
He said the drive has proved to be effective and over 1,000 tempos and autos have been checked.
He said music players from at least 72 tempos and autos were removed in the Mahanagar police circle.
Similarly, 56 music players in Aliganj, 51 in Ghazipur and 48 music players were removed in Gomti Nagar circle.
