Budding shooter from city Samarjit Singh on Sunday did India proud by winning gold medal at 6th Asian Shooting Championship in Tehran.

In the youth category, Samarjit shot 568 in the qualifying round and went into the finals (top 8) at 5th place.

Once there, he led right from the word go and didn’t let his competitors come anywhere near him in the 10m air pistol with a final tally of 197.5 points.

The silver and bronze medals went to Iranian and Chinese shooters respectively at the event, which saw participation from many Asian nations.

Being coached by his father and national shooter Mukuljeet Singh, 15-year-old Samarjit, a resident of Mall Avenue here, showed his class and proved that this was just the beginning and he was capable of achieving much bigger goals.

The shooting star was left disappointed after he finished fifth in the previous edition of the event in China and this time he wanted to prove a point to himself.

“I was committed to do well this time as I had a disappointing fifth place finish at the Asian meet in China last time,” an exulted Samarjeet told HT soon after his win.
“I corrected my technique with the guidance of my father and that helped me in striking gold.”

On his next goal, Samarjit said: “I have my eyes set on next year’s Youth Olympics and the World Championship.”

Samarjit, a student of Class 10 at the Doon School, was the flag bearer for India at the recently held Youth Asian Games in China.
