A trader of Old City committed suicide after shooting his 25-year-old son dead at his Chowk residence on Sunday morning. The trader’s ailing son had undergone a kidney transplant in a Kolkata hospital in 2014 but the organ was not responding well.
Police said that the trader was depressed due to his son’s prolonged illness and he had also been facing financial problems for the past few years. They cited these reasons for his extreme step but said further probe was on.
The trader Manoj Rastogi, 55, was a money lender and lived in Raja Bazar with his wife Ritu and son Rohit Rastogi. The incident took place when Rastogi’s wife had gone for a morning walk and he was alone in the house with his son.
The trader’s wife returned from the morning walk at around 8am and found the room locked from inside. The bodies of the trader and his son were found lying in a pool of blood when she broke into the room with the help of her nephew Ankit Rastogi. The body of the son was lying on the floor while the trader’s body lay on the bed, with his licensed revolver in hand. The family then alerted the local cops about the incident.
Additional SP, West, Sarvesh Mishra said preliminary probe suggested that the trader had committed suicide after killing his son. However, a forensic team was called to collect evidence from the spot.
