Seen on the emblem of India, Asiatic lions will be a part of the Lucknow zoo by next week.

A team from Lucknow zoo has left for Rajkot zoological park in Gujarat to bring a pair of the Asiatic Lions - a one year old cub and 4-year-old female from there. “They (lions) should reach us in five to eight days from now,” said Renu Singh, zoo director.

There are four Asiatic lions standing back-to-back - symbolising the power, courage, pride, and confidence - mounted on a circular abacus in the emblem.

Asiatic lion is the second largest big cat in the world, after the ferocious tiger. A full-grown male tiger reaches a length of 1.7 metre to 2.5 metre. The most striking morphological character, which is always seen in Asiatic lions, but rarely in African lions, is a longitudinal fold of skin running along its belly.

The zoo has been trying for long to get a pair of Asiatic Lions for the state under animal exchange programme, the success of which is just a few days away.

“We have made all preparations for the pair and even the smallest detail has been finalised to keep the animals comfortable in their new home,” said the zoo director. The Central Zoo Authority had given consent to the exchange of animals between Lucknow and Rajkot zoo under which Rajkot zoo will get animals from Lucknow.
