A minor girl sustained 95% burn injuries after she was set ablaze by a man living in her neighbourhood in Nagla Kamal under Kheragarh tehsil of Agra district on Tuesday. The man took the extreme step after the girl rejected his proposal for friendship and undue advances.
The 16-year-old girl, admitted at the emergency ward of SN Hospital in Agra, recorded her statement before the magistrate. According to doctors, the girl’s condition is critical.
The victim had written her high school exams this year. The accused, Narendra (32), lived in her neighbourhood and was unemployed. He was infamous for causing nuisance and is absconding since the incident.
“My daughter used to call the accused as her chacha (uncle). On Monday, Narendra took my daughter to his house on the pretext that his mother wanted to meet her. However, as soon as she went there, Narendra locked the house from inside,” said the girl’s father.
“My younger daughter who was witness to the incident, informed my nephew about it who reached Narendra’s house and knocked the door. I also reached there and rescued her. She complained that Narendra was forcing her for friendship and a relationship,” the victim’s father said.
The victim’s furious father thrashed Narendra after the incident. However, no complaint was lodged with the police.
“On Tuesday, around 5.30am, Narendra barged into my house and poured kerosene on my daughter and set her ablaze. By the time the fire was doused, she had sustained 95% burn injuries,” said the father.
The family took the girl to Kheragarh for treatment but she was referred to Agra and was admitted at emergency ward of SN Hospital.
“A case would be registered once the complaint is filed. We have recorded the statement of the girl,” said a police official at Kheragarh police station.
