Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday supported capital punishment for the rapists.

“If the central government brings amendment bill in Parliament for death sentence to the rapists my party would give full support to the proposal”, she said.

Addressing a press conference at her residence Mayawati said, “the central government should frame stringent laws to check crime against women.

Demanding a special session of Parliament Mayawati said, “the central government should frame strict laws for the security of the women without any delay”.

Expressing grief over the demise of the 23-year-old gangrape victim in Singapore Mayawati said when the incident took place the Parliament session was underway and she raised the issue on the floor of Rajya Sabha.

"Besides severe punishment to persons involved in such an incident, wide publicity of the punishment should be made so that such elements will think 10 times before doing so," she said.

I have shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting that there should be no delay in the law amendment and he should call a special session of Parliament. We should provide security to the women of the country at the earliest. Central government has to fulfill its responsibility toward the women coming from various section of the society. Other states should take a lesson from the episode.

The media reports the incidents of rape but hardly any action is taken against the perpetrators of the crime. After few days the administration and people forget the incident. In UP too there had been spurt in the crime against women after Samajwadi Party came to power. The women and girls do not tread outside their house after sunset. Within 10 months 1,500 cases of rape have been reported in the state. No action had been taken against the culprits.

Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav has condemned the Delhi rape incidents and had announced job and financial assistance to the victim. He should rather introspect over the incidents in UP. How many of the rape victims have got government job or financial aid from the state government. Will the modesty of the girl restored by giving job or money. Instead he should campaign for stringent laws to check crime against women”, she said.

Asked that compensation was given to the rape victim during her regime, Mayawati said that was a different matter. "We do not agree with the fact that you give job and money, but don't take action against the guilty. Modesty of our sisters matters more than job and financial assistance," she said.

On the controversial statement made by Abhjit Mukherjee the son of President Pranab Mukherjee's against protesters of the gangrape case, Mayawati said his statement was not appropriate.
