Two Meerut-based jewellers were robbed of gold jewellery, weighing around three kilogram, at gunpoint when they were on their way to Chowk market on a tempo early on Wednesday morning.

Reportedly, three armed fugitives boarded the same vehicle and hit the jewellers with the firearms when they resisted before decamping with the Rs. 3 crore worth jewellery.
The victims, Vishal Chand Jain and his employee Mohit Gupta, have sustained minor injuries on their face and head. They had come to Lucknow to deliver gold ornaments to jewellery showrooms in Chowk on Wednesday. Notably, the incident occurred barely 250 metres from the Naka police station.
“Jain owns a jewellery shop at Dharampuri in Meerut’s Sadar Bazaar and had arrived in Lucknow on Nauchandi Express at 5.55am with Gupta to deliver a jewellery assignment. The duo boarded a tempo to Chowk from the railway station, when the three robbers also boarded the same tempo. The trio snatched the two bags and a suitcase containing gold ornaments as the tempo reached Sardar tent on gunpoint and forced the tempo driver to stop the vehicle near Navyug School crossing before disappearing,” a police spokesman said.
Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Gyan Prakash Chaturvedi said the modus operandi of the robbers suggest they had accurate information about the movement of Jain and the jewellery they were carrying.
“Jain was earlier robbed in Merrut in 2007 and four persons were arrested in the matter. We are trying to track down the accused arrested in the 2007 case. There are chances that the same gang is behind the Wednesday crime,” the ASP said.
An FIR has already been lodged in the case, however police are yet to make any arrests. The tempo driver Bablu has also been taken in custody for questioning, he added.
