District police spokesperson Alok Pathak said murder and sexual assault had been ascertained in the post mortem examination. “The girl was smothered to death. There were injuries on her private parts that suggested that she was raped before being killed,” he said.
Earlier, Inspector of Gudamba police station Rishikesh Yadav had said the body was sent for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death and possibility of rape and further action would be based on the findings of the post mortem examination report.
Prior to this, the police had tried to hush up the matter by stating that the girl had died of snakebite.
