A city-based doctor is conducting a series of motivational lectures, aimed at “imparting the ‘art of happiness’ among people”. Aliganj-based surgeon Dr RK Verma, whose book on the topic too would be released soon, cites latest examples – like billionaire brothers liquor baron Ponty Chadha and Hardeep who shot each other dead over property dispute – to drive home the point that money can’t buy happiness.

“Only a truly healthy body and mind can ensure that and one can achieve them through a series of simple yet highly effective ways,” he told the audience on Sunday, comprising a motley group of youth and senior citizens whose free health check up is also done at these lecture camps.

The doctor, who also speaks at city’s temples, says one of the causes of anxiety-induced stress among people is greed and expectation, which he says, aggravates ageing. Punctuating his lecture with anecdotes, Dr Verma also provided the people at Aliganj’s Sector J Kothari Park some simple ways to check if they were actually fit mentally and physically.

“Happiness is a combination of several factors. Often senior citizens say they have played their innings. Such talk is fuelled by negativity, which can be effectively controlled through mind (power), medicine and meditation,” he said.

He said: “Think of a tree. It doesn’t demand much but gives back so much. People who run after material things become slaves of the rich or start becoming corrupt. If one has to retain the elixir of life one has to start freeing oneself from material trappings. Yes, you require wealth to live. But what people often forget to answer is: How much is enough.”

In his follow up lectures, the doctor plans to talk on this aspect as well. Why is he doing all this? “In so many years, I have seen a lot of wealthy people who are very rich yet very sad, weighed down with age, disease and desire. I realised that mere medicines won’t control this. So I thought of motivating people. It has been six months now and I am loving it,” he says.
