More than 95 per cent of the electorate cast their votes for the 36 seats (local area constituency) of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council as polling passed off peacefully in 71 districts of the state, a senior election department official said here.
"The polling passed off peacefully and no major complaint was received from any part of the state. As per the reports received so far an average 95.53 per cent polling has been registered," Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told PTI.
He said that as figures from some districts were yet to be received the polling percentage could increase.
Total 193 candidates are in the fray for 36 seats, having over 1.33 lakh electorate.
In Basti district, 98.17 per cent polling was recorded for Basti-Siddharth Nagar seat.
Similarly, 95 per cent votes were polled for Allahabad-Kaushambi seat, whereas 97.5 per cent polling was registered for Agra-Firozabad seat.
For Shahjahanpur-Pilibhit seat, 97 per cent of the electorate turned up to cast their votes.
Several prominent leaders including Chief Minister Mayawati cast their votes with the BSP supremo casting her vote at a polling centre in Lucknow.
