Condemning the attack on Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi by MNS members in Maharashtra assembly, party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday said that Azmi had done the nation proud by taking oath in the national language.
"I would like to congratulate Azmi for maintaining the honour of the national language by taking oath in Hindi," Yadav told reporters here.
The SP supremo said that those, who fight for the ideology have to suffer a bit and added, "Entire nation will honour Azmi for taking oath in Hindi."
As soon as, Azmi began taking oath in Hindi, the 13 member-strong MNS contingent rushed towards Azmi, snatching the mike placed for taking oath at the podium.
The MNS demanded that Azmi should take oath in Marathi.
The House was adjourned for 30 minutes as pandemonium continued and soon after that MNS MLA Ram Kadam slapped Azmi.
MNS Chief Raj Thackeray had last month announced that his party legislators would ensure that all MLAs took oath in Marathi.
"If any MLA does not take oath in Marathi, the House will see what happens," Raj had threatened.
