No plane, but fliers taken for a ride

In a major goof-up 15 Air India passengers were issued tickets for a Lucknow-Delhi flight that did not exist.

On Saturday morning when passengers of flight AI -970 scheduled for 6.30 am reached the Chaudhary Charan Singh airport in Lucknow, they were allowed entry into the terminal as all of them had genuine tickets. But even as passengers continued to reach, they were surprised that there was no Air India staff in sight.

Many passengers had reported two hours before the scheduled departure, but when there seemed no signs of a flight taking off they suspected something was amiss and started complaining to the AAI staff.

Admitting the goof-up, AI’s terminal manager Sujeet Kumar said, “All the passengers were sent to Delhi on the Jet flight, but we are inquiring how tickets were issued for a flight that wasn’t scheduled for the day”.

AI officials were, however, unable to tell the reason behind the goof-up. Whether AI’s site was hacked or some private agency issued the tickets, the only solace for the airline was that the ticket money was transferred into its account. Director airport told HT: “Entry was allowed inside the terminal only after checking genuine tickets.”
