Construction of Mall Avenue overbridge has hit another hurdle. This time, the Cantonment Board has raised objections to the bridge on the ground that a no-objection certificate (NoC) was not taken from it.
The bridge is being constructed by the UP State Bridge Corporation and UP public works department.
The cantonment board meeting on Friday was dominated by unanimous opposition to the bridge. Given the majority of corporators favouring a proposal to raise objections, the board meeting decided to lodge objection with the state government. Major Suresh Gupta, president Cantt Board, presided over the meeting.
Chairman, cantonment board, Ratan Singhania said that the state government had started construction of the overbridge without persmission of cantonment board authorities.
“They have to inrtude inside around 400 metres in our land and they don’t have the courtesy to even take permission from cantonment authorities. The board has decided to write a letter to the state government to stop the contruction and seek permission before entering our area,” said Singhania.
The opposition to the bridge is not new. Earlier, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders criticised the project for its proximity to the residence of BSP chief Mayawati. Notably, the board is also dominated by BSP members.
However, a team of army officials visited the overbridge construction site and had a talk with the PWD and bridge corporation officials. State officials said there was an understanding between the higher-ups in the army and the state government over the construction of the over bridge as it was in public interest. Papers for permission from the Cantonment autorities were moved some time ago.
The board members also passed the proposal to repair and construct drains at a cost of R40 lakh. The drains in the area were consurcted in 1938 and need repair. An amount of R1.90 crore would be spent on interlocking of pavements in cantonment.
The board also passed the proposal to spend R20 lakh on trimming of trees and installation of two submersibles.
