Come Sunday and women receptionists would attend complaints at all police stations situated in urban areas of the city. Meanwhile, their male counterparts would attend to complaints in rural areas.

Notably, the step is being taken to ensure better communication with complainants, says senior superintendent of police (SSP) RK Chaturvedi.

He said these receptionists would actually be constables, who would be given the task of receiving complaints.

However, women receptionists would only be deputed in urban areas due to shortage of enough women police officers.

“First of all, women constables would help in improving the general behaviour of the police with the public, as women are naturally politer than their male counterparts and have the ability to listen patiently.”

“The reception facility has been arranged after witnessing a trend in Lucknow that several complainants directly turn up before senior police officers without approaching the police stations concerned with their area. As such, police officers refuse to entertain their complaints”

“However, with this system in place, every complaint would be received and it would also be easy to track the development in the case through this process,” he said.

He added that this would also hold police officers accountable and they would not be able escape by saying that the complainant had not approached them.
