Pepper spray is best ammo for girls!

lucknow Updated: Mar 13, 2013 11:23 IST

How about the government distributing pepper sprays among girls and imposing a ban on boys standing in groups on the roads?

These suggestions, if put into practice, would go a long way in ensuring safety of women in the city, opined students of Modern Girls’ College of Professional Studies, Gomti Nagar.

When asked how many of them felt safe walking on the roads alone, none raised their hand.

“Pepper spray is the best and most affordable ammo for girls. They must carry it for their safety. In fact, the government should distribute it among girls,” said a student of mass communication.

Echoing similar views, other students lamented insensitivity of police, deteriorating law & order situation and suggested various measures that they wanted the state to adopt for ensuring safety of women. Majority of them said eve-teasing was the biggest problem faced by them.

“I stay in Sujanpurwa and it is really scary to walk even within the colony. With groups of boys standing here and there and streetlights missing from the entire stretch, even my father fears sending me anywhere alone,” said a student.

The students suggested that auto and bus drivers should be given lectures on behaviour, as they were among the biggest culprits when it came to safety of women in public transport.

Mushrooming liquor shops was another major issue highlighted by the students. “Groups of drunk men state stand near liquor shops and pass lewd remarks at every woman who passes by. Since the men are not in their senses, it is risky to raise a voice against them,” said another student.

Among other drawbacks of the system, the students also blamed the insensitivity of the people, who prefer to keep mum even when a girl is being eve-teased.

Rajiv Tuli, director of the college, announced that self-defence classes would be held for the girls in the college. The idea was widely accepted and all students agreed to attend these classes.

He said a weeklong workshop would soon be organised to equip girls with techniques to defend themselves.
