While launching her party’s poll campaign with her brother, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, in the family bastion, Priyanka, who has been on the forefront of her party’s election campaign in the two Congress bastions in the past, was able to visit only two assembly constituencies - Rae Bareli city and Bachhrawan (SC). Hence, the party leaders and candidates have requested her to help boost the poll campaign in Rae Bareli.

“Both Rahul and Priyanka addressed public meeting at GIC grounds in my constituency on Friday. I requested Priyanka to come again. We are waiting for her programme now,” said Congress candidate Aditi Singh.

Rahul is also scheduled to hold a poll meeting in Amethi on Monday. “Priyanka may join Rahul there before proceeding to Rae Bareli,” said another party leader.

As the Congress and SP candidates are face to face in four out of 10 assembly constituencies of Rae Bareli and Amethi, the party would be cautious in working out her poll campaign programme. Priyanka may focus her campaign in the remaining six constituencies and may just hold roadshows and corner meetings at other places. “Modalities of Rahul and Priyanka’s programme were still being finalized,” said the leader.

Addressing public meetings, both Rahul and Priyanka had targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not bringing about development to the region. Addressing public meeting at GIC grounds in Rae Bareli on Friday Rahul attacked Modi for cancelling the food park project and said the PM was pursuing politics of vendetta. Priyanka too had targeted Modi for no development. “As PM he could do more for development. Modi should learn this from former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi who brought about development to Amethi,” said Priyanka while addressing a public meeting at Baburiha village under Bachhrawan (SC) assembly constituency on Friday.

Besides the cancelled food park project a number of other projects too have been shelved or work has been stopped after installation of the Modi government in 2014.

An all women university, a rail wheel factory and a number of other rail projects proposed for Rae Bareli had been shelved by Modi government, said a local Congress leaders. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) set up in Rae Bareli has not been made functional. The OPD building in the proposed campus of AIIMS was completed with an estimated cost of Rs 240 crore about two years ago.
