Purchase of acid made tough in UP

The state government on Monday decided to regulate the sale of acid to check acid attacks.
Those under 18 years of age will not be eligible to purchase acid from shops.
Also, now a person will have to submit a photocopy of the identity card issued by the government to get a bottle of acid.
Usually people purchase acid for domestic use from the provision shops.
Talking to media persons, principal secretary, Home, RM Srivastava said the Supreme Court in its order had directed the state governments to regulate the sale of acid in view of the spurt in the cases of acid attacks.
In UP, too, cases of acid attacks have been reported recently in Meerut, Agra, Gonda, Kanpur and Bareilly districts, following which there has been a demand to ban open sale of acid in the market.
Srivastava said the shops selling acid would maintain a register.
The detail of the buyers, including name, address, the purpose for which acid has been purchased and the quantity of acid purchased, would be maintained by the sellers.
Sub divisional magistrates would monitor the sale of the acid in their respective area.
If any irregularity was detected, he would seize the stock and impose fine of Rs 50,000.
A detail report of the stock, registration number and address of the shop would be submitted by the shopkeeper in the commercial tax department, which in turn would pass the information to the sub divisional magistrates, Srivastava said.
Educational institutions, research laboratories, hospitals and government departments that stocks acid would have to now maintain a register indicating the stock of acid and would periodically submit report to the sub divisional magistrates regarding consumption of acid.
Organizations and institutions would have to appoint an officer who will handle the stock and those violating the order would be punished, Srivastava said.
The state government has directed all the district magistrates and superintendent of police to implement the acid sale regulation strictly.
