Keen to make inroads into the Bundelkhand region, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi is likely to hold public meetings in the region as part of the ongoing party yatra.
"UPCC (Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee) has requested Rahul Gandhi to participate in a public meeting in Bundelkhand and another in Naxal-effected Sonebhadra or Mirzapur district during the yatra, before May 31," UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said on Tuesday.
"A similar request would also be made to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for addressing meeting along with Rahul in the Bundelkhand region," Joshi said, adding Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be requested to address a rally in western UP.
The yatra, to commemorate 125 years of Congress' foundation, was flagged off by Rahul Gandhi from Ambedkar Nagar on April 14, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dalit leader B R Ambedkar.
Party sources said that response to the yatra has been very encouraging and it is generating interest among the people.
The party has deployed Dalit leaders including those who had been associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party in the past such as Raj Bahadur and Balihari Babu to attack the state government, they said.
