Absconding police inspector Sanjai Rai’s role is also suspected in the murder of a woman, who was also a relative of his lover. Rai is already being investigated for masterminding the murder of his ladylove’s 13-year-old cousin Maaz after arrest of his close aide Chotu and two hired shooters on June 9.
The other victim, Tabassum was killed around three years ago. Police suspect Rai because of the similarities between the murder of Tabassum and Maaz.
“Both were relatives of Sanjai Rai’s ladylove, no personal reasons for murder of either victim were found in the probe. Interestingly, young men close to Rai’s lover were initially framed in both murders. And both were let off after a detailed probe in the cases,” says a police officer, who is supervising the current probe.
Further elaborating on the motive, the officer said, “In the Maaz murder case, Rai allegedly masterminded the killing because he wanted to implicate a man named Aqmal, who was planning to marry his ladylove but the conspiracy was foiled.
In the Tabassum case, one Furkan, who at that time was close to Rai’s lover, was booked and sent to jail. But he was acquitted by the court in just eleven months after no evidence was found against him.”
The similarities had led to suspicions that Rai was involved in both cases. Anyone who came close to his lover, landed in trouble, the cop emphasised.
Tabassum’s bullet riddled body was found in Kakori on October 27, 2010 after she had been missing for two weeks from her Ghazipur home. Rai’s lover and Furkan were named as prime accused but only Furkan was booked. Notably, Rai, who was the then in-charge of Ghazipur police station, was the investigation officer of the case and he removed his ladylove’s name during the probe.
The encounter specialist has been on the run since his name surfaced in the murder of Maaz Ahmed.
The boy who was staying with his cousin’s family, was killed by four assailants, who barged into the family’s Indira Nagar home on May 29.
