Bahujan Samaj Party MLA from Banda Purshottan Narain Dwivedi, who been accused of raping a minor girl held captive at his residence for four days, was arrested by the Banda police on Thursday.
DIG (Chitrakoot Range) SK Mathur told HT Dwivedi was nabbed by a police team near Agausi village in Banda district.
Dwivedi and three accomplices are alleged to have raped the 17-year-old at his residence in Banda on December 11 and 12. Two accomplices have also been arrested but the third one is absconding, the police said.
The police had registered an FIR against the MLA and the others on the instruction of the UP government on Wednesday.
The victim is due to appear before the Banda court on Friday for hearing in a case of theft registered against her. Her bail application will come up for hearing on January 17.
The victim was arrested on the charge of stealing a mobile phone and Rs5,000 during her captivity at the MLA's house.
The victim was held at the MLA's residence for four days from December 8 to 12 and escaped after being raped.
The state government swung into action after the preliminary report of the crime branch CID nailed him in the rape case. State cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh had announced on Wednesday that CM Mayawati had ordered registration of an FIR and arrest of the MLA.
