The city police on Thursday announced a reward of Rs 5,000 each on absconding inspector Sanjai Rai and two contract killers -- Bunty Yadav and Hemant alias Pahalwan -- in connection with the Maaz murder case. Rai has been evading arrest for the past 19 days despite the cops’ marathon efforts to nab him.
Rai’s name surfaced in the case after the arrest of three persons, including his domestic help Ram Babu and two hired shooters -- Ajit Rai and Rahul Rai -- on June 9. Class 8 boy Maaz was sprayed with bullets by four assailants who barged into his house in Indira Nagar on May 29.
SSP J Ravinder Goud said a recommendation to increase the reward would be made to senior state police officers, if required. Rai, who is an expert in electronic surveillance, has been dodging police teams frequently by changing his locations and cell phone numbers for over a fortnight. The two shooters Bunty Yadav and Pahalwan are also on the run since then. The shooters used Rai’s Alto car used to commit the crime.
The police probe so far has revealed that Rai masterminded the boy’s killing to implicate one Akmal, who had come close to his ladylove. The boy was a relative of Rai’s ladylove and stayed with her family in Indira Nagar.
