Former gram pradhan (village head) Shailendra Singh, 45, who was also secretary of the Atraulia assembly segment of the SP, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne miscreants near Hisamuddinpur village.

Preliminary investigation indicated that rivalry over a contract for road construction work was the motive for the murder.

The incident took place when Shailendra Singh was reviewing road construction work at Hisamuddinpur village around 8am. Singh had bagged the contract for the work recently.

Superintendent of police (rural) Mohammad Irfan, circle officer Brijendra Pandey, station officer Brijesh Yadav and other police personnel rushed to the spot. As the news of SP leader’s murder spread in the district, hundreds of Samajwadi Party leaders reached the district hospital.

The police have launched a manhunt for the killers.
