The UP Sangeet Natak Akademi was established with the objective of promoting sangeet, natak and other performing arts, but the department doesn’t seem to be performing well in this direction.
While those at the helm of affairs had promised a number of activities for the revival of the academy that ‘lay dead’ for a long time, the positive results are yet to be visible.
Though the six members of the akademi’s panel are drawing a salary of R 25,000 per month, their efforts to promote art are hardly visible.
Sources at the akademi said there have hardly been a few meetings of the members and no concrete planning/decision-making has been done.
The UP Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, which were discontinued from 2002, were also be to be revived soon after the new chairman took over in January 2013.
However, nothing concrete has happened in this direction.
Senior artistes of the city who have been members of the akademi in the past said, “There was never a provision of salary for the members of the akademi. The panel would only meet when there was any planning to be done or any decision regarding the programmes, awards etc to be made.”
These members had expertise in the fields of music and dance and other art forms.
A senior artiste based in Lucknow said, “The standards of the akademi in the past could well be imagined when the positions were held by deserving people.
The prestigious position of chairman of the akademi was held by Padma Vibhushan Hari Prasad Chaurasia ji himself in the past SP regime.”
Many feel that the akademi was shifting from its objectives.
Promotion of performing arts, which was the main objective of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad when he brought in the concept of akademis in India seemed to have been defeated.
