Nearly 1.8 crore school children in Uttar Pradesh are in the process of getting schoolbags for free. The catch, however is, these bags will have the photograph of former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Call it some compulsion or large heartedness of current chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government has decided not to dump the schoolbags with the photograph of Akhilesh.
While the decision has caught many by surprise, education department officials insist the chief minister is against wasteful expenditure of public money.
- Over 1 crore students of basic and primary government schools across Uttar Pradesh received stainless steel plates and glasses bearing the photograph of Akhilesh. The distribution began on Dhanteras day in October last. Former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav himself presented the new utensils to students of a government school in Mohanlalganj area of state capital Lucknow.
- Initially, the utensils were distributed in a few blocks but gradually all government schools were covered in a phased manner and kids received the new plates and glasses by December end.
“Also, if the state government had ordered new bags, it would have taken few months while the government wants students to get bags before the start of the new academic session,” said an official.
The previous Samajwadi Party government had placed order for nearly 1.8 crore schoolbags in December last year.
However, with assembly election notification coming in January first week, the distribution of school bags, which had just begun, had to be stopped owing to model code of conduct.
With officials waiting for the new government to take call on distribution, thousands of bags remain stacked at district education offices since.
The distribution, however, have begun now.
Meanwhile, the government has announced that no scheme would be named after any person.
Once the bags are exhausted, the new set to be printed will have ‘Mukhya Mantri Yojana’ or ‘Uttar Pradesh Yojana’.
After coming to power, the BJP government has also decided to do away with prefix ‘Samajwadi’ from many of the state government scheme.
Some of them are Samajwadi Smartphone scheme, the Samajwadi Namak (fortified salt) scheme and stainless steel plates for schoolchildren with Akhilesh Yadav stickers. The Samajwadi laptops launched in 2012 had Akhilesh Yadav and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav as screen savers.
18 lakh laptops too had Akhilesh, Mulayam photos
The previous government which had distributed over 18 lakh laptops among Class 12 pass-outs had images of two Yadavs —SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav—with a caption “Poore hote vaade” (fulfilling the promises) and the logo of the state government.
