The campaign to declare Rae Bareli as a Smart City is gaining momentum.

A Smart City Sangharsh Samiti has been constituted in the district and its campaign is getting bigger, with the District Congress Committee (DCC) extending its support to the cause.

“Rae Bareli meets the criteria of being identified for development as a Smart City. The state government has already sent a recommendation to the Centre and Congress president Sonia Gandhi is making efforts in this direction,” said DCC president Umashankar Mishra while talking to media persons in Rae Bareli on Thursday.

Mishra quoted letters that Sonia Gandhi has sent to chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and the state government has sent to the Centre in the past few months. “I am writing to you in continuation with verbal communication between our offices regarding inclusion of Rae Bareli and Amethi districts in the proposal of Smart City project to be sent by government UP to the government of India. I would appreciate your looking into this matter personally. I shall also be grateful if I am kept informed of the action taken in this regard,” said Gandhi in her letter dated April 15, 2015 to the chief minister.

Replying to the letter on June 1, 2015, the chief minister said: “The state government has recommended to the government of India for inclusion of Rae Bareli and Amethi districts in the proposal for Smart City project.”

As the state government’s recommendation remains pending with the Centre, a delegation of Smart City Sangharsh Samiti is likely to leave for New Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi and mount pressure on the central government. “We have been meeting the local legislators for the past few days. We have also held a road show and a memorandum has been sent to chief minister through the district magistrate in support of our demand. A delegation will soon leave to meet Sonia Gandhi,” said Basant Singh Bagga of the association.

About the inclusion of Amethi, the Congress leaders said that the Lok Sabha seat of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had not been able to meet the criteria. “Rae Bareli has met all the parameters. It has Rail Coach Factory, Rail Wheel Factory, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy, NTPC, NIPER, NIFT and five national highways,” said Mishra.

Chief secretary Alok Ranjan said that the state government has recommended Rae Bareli and Meerut as the two cities to be included in Smart City project. If the state government’s recommendation is accepted, the number of Smart Cities in UP will go up to 14,” said Ranjan. The chief minister has earlier said that the state government favoured inclusion of both Rae Bareli and Meerut in the list of Smart City project as it would take the number of Smart Cities in UP to 14 from 13 which is considered to be an inauspicious number.

Sonia Gandhi’s pitch
