There were violent clashes across UP on the first day of the agitation against the state government even as Samajwadi Party president and MP Mulayam Singh Yadav was detained on Monday at his Lucknow residence.

However, after an hour’s “house arrest”, he and his son Akhilesh Yadav, MP and president of the state unit of the party, were allowed take the flight to New Delhi to attend the Lok Sabha session.

In Lucknow, the agitators locked up an adjunct building of the state secretariat and the commissioner’s office.

Mulayam Singh Yadav said: “This (house arrest) is violation of the special privileges (of MPs).”

He has given the call for “crippling the government” as it was “autocratic, oppressive and corrupt”.

Lucknow district magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar said: “Our arrangements will stay for the next two days as well.”

In Parliament, SP members disrupted the Lok Sabha, accusing the state government of detaining Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son in Lucknow.
