Five students of Etawah’s Industrial Training Institute (ITI) were arrested for molesting women at gunpoint on Delhi-bound Gomti Express and beating up cops and passengers on Monday morning. The incident took place near Phaphund railway station in Etawah, nearly 300 km from Lucknow.
Police said the students thrashed cops and passengers too when they protested the molestation bid. The students, who had boarded the Lucknow-Delhi train at Dibyapur, resorted to chain-pulling after the incident and tried to escape. When challenged by some more cops, they opened fire only to be retaliated and overpowered. The train resumed its journey after some delay.
“Some of the girls mustered courage and managed to approach Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials in the train after which the five students were nabbed,” said a Government Railway Police (GRP) official from Etawah.
However, a communiqué from the DGP office did not mention the firing angle and said the students clashed with some passengers over seats near Samho station. “They beat up passengers and also clashed with the railway security,” the report said. All the students arrested are residents of Dibyapur town in Auraiya district and are enrolled with an ITI in Etawah. They were identified as Pankaj Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Umesh Chandra and Vivek Kumar.
According to officials, besides the five students some of their friends were also involved in the incident. “The five are being questioned to know the whereabouts of the other students involved in the incident,” police said.
